E3 2018 Dreams — I Want Ghost of Tsushima to Be the Samurai Game I’ve Always Dreamt Of

PlayStation’s focus on a handful of games for E3 2018 was well-known weeks before they held their press conference. With rumors swirling about a potential PlayStation 5 on the horizon, it was apparent that the platform holder would focus on its current crop of announced titles. The Last of Us Part II and Spider-Man are proven winners, and Death Standing continued to intrigue. Fast forward about six months after the PS4 released and Sony announced during E3 2014 that The Last of Us Remastered would be hitting the console in one month. It was a move many anticipated before the PS4’s launch, but one that also left a sour taste in some’s mouths. Sony was now giving us the “better” version of the game instead of holding back the initial release to coincide with its next-gen launch. Ghost of Tsushima does share some DNA with Sly Cooper’s stealth sections. Jin can attack enemies outright or stalk them from the shadows and stealthily take them out. While this is out of character for a samurai, Sucker Punch did confirm that the narrative motivates the use of stealth. All of Jin’s samurai allies were killed fighting like samurai. To beat back the Mongols, Jin needs to vary up his tactics, even if it goes against everything he knows.

At any rate, there were some pretty good announcements made during this short stream. We got confirmation of a few rumors ( Resident Evil 3 , Untitled Goose Game , Kingdom Hearts 3 Re:Mind ), a short look at Platinum’s next title, and even a tease for Ghost of Tsushima . Jinsuki is a samurai who wants to become the Ghost of Tsushima, and in order to do that, he must be as unseen as possible. he can use a grappling hook to get the drop on enemies – adding a lot of speed to stealth, a genre that is normally thought of as being slow-paced. Beyond samurai films, games like the Legend of Zelda and Sucker Punch’s own Infamous inspired what we’re seeing now with Ghost of Tsushima. It’s an ambitious game and they were deliberate in their desire to wait to show off until it was ready. Camera angles will be used in ways to make the stances seem more impactful. Nobu the horse was shown off a bit as well, and more will be revealed with him later. The team enjoyed going with a darker tone than what they’re used to with the Infamous franchise, and making the scope larger required them to learn new skills – like motion capturing a horse!

There’s no doubt that Sucker Punch Productions is a talented developer having previously delivered two stellar franchises. To see them do something so different and pull it off as well as they have, however, is masterful. Beautiful and deadly, Ghost of Tsushima is shaping up to be a real showcase for the PS4 and the studio. We still have a ways off before the game finally launches, but we’re excited to see what else Ghost of Tsushima has in store for us.

This year’s E3 is mere days away, as developers and publishers gear up for an onslaught of reveals, trailers and gameplay demos for a massive lineup of games with enough variety to get gamers of any flavor hyped for the near and far future of releases. Even with a smaller amount of press conferences than usual, E3 2019 is still set to be the biggest week in gaming news this year, but that doesn’t mean every big title is going to get a chance to shine in the spotlight just yet. To set the expectations of fans correctly, developers have recently begun to be more forward as to exactly which previously announced titles will be foregoing the E3 press conferences and show floor for various reasons and below is an up-to-date list on which titles not to expect at E3 2019.

Ghost of Tsushima dazzled at Sony’s E3 presentation, and Jason Connell, the art and creative director, hit the floor to talk about the game. The HUD will be reduced to its core elements and allow a more cinematic experience. Ghost of Tsushima is inspired by events that occurred in 1274, but will use original characters to tell its tales. The game’s open-world is huge and the biggest one Sucker Punch has created yet. The setting was meant to be secretive, and the team itself was worried it would leak due to of all things – a business card being given out. Tension is planned to be visible in all strikes – and the goal of the combat is to put you in the world. This means that you will get mud splashed on you if you’re in mud, or covered in flowers if you’re in a flower-filled area. It’s meant to absorb you in the game, and aims to add a sense of realism to things.
